MEMELANDS GUIDE FOR NEW PLAYERS
This is the Memelands Guide For New Players, a guide primarily directed towards our new members. If you are not new or not whitelisted you can still read this to learn more about how the server works.
Welcome to the server! We hope you will have a great time on Memelands!
We have divided this guide into different sections with important information about a specific part of server. The sections are meant to be read in chronological order but you may also come back and read through an individual section later.
Reading this guide is not mandatory, but it will probably help you a lot in a various of strange, unexpected or funny situations you might encounter here. As Memelands is a very unique server in many ways and a large part of the community has been here for years, we understand that some players may find their first time on the server a bit challenging. But don't worry, this guide will help you through that process!
We also want to emphasize that there is nothing wrong with asking other players for help, this guide can only cover so much.
Before joining the Minecraft server
We know that you are eager to get going and start building, but just hold that of for a second and make sure you have done all the things below:
Joined the Memelands discord server: it is important that you join the discord server before connecting to the Minecraft server. This way you do not miss out on vital information about the server and you can communicate with other members outside of the Minecraft chat. Most likely you have already done this though as it's through discord we prompt you to read this guide!

Upon being accepted to the server, an admin contact you on discord (it's important to accept our friend request) and send you the invite link.
Read our rules: you may already be familiar with our rules, but it's good to have a refresher just before joining the server. Make sure to read our server, shop and nether hub rules.
You can read our rules on here or in the discord server.
If you want to utilize the in-game voice chat, you will need to install the Simple Voice Chat mod.
A tutorial on how to install the mod can be found here.
Your first time on Memelands
Now it's time for the fun stuff!
You connect to the server by using play.memelands.com as the server address. Make sure you are running the correct Minecraft version as well. We sometimes wait a while before updating the server when a new updates comes around because so that all of our essential server software is stable and up to date. Our server version can be found in the About page on here and in #info-and-rules on discord.
Upon joining the server, you will be greeted by a blue and yellow board with a sign that says "WELCOME TO MEMELANDS". You have spawned in the historical town of Area 69 (as it was named with a democratic process)! Every Memelands player begun their journey here. Area 69 is, perhaps not surprisingly, the heart of the Memelands world and host to many famous places.
It is recommended that the first thing you do in Memelands is to visit the Town Hall. There are signs placed out which will guide you there. (in the image above straight ahead is the direction to the Town Hall.
The town hall entrance.
Inside the Town Hall
There are starter chests inside of the Town Hall. If you want to, you can take one inventory slot of each item from the chests.
The Town Hall also contains a mailbox room. Read through the instructions and write your username on sign on an empty barrel to claim a mailbox.
You may now go through the nether portal inside of the Town Hall which leads to the very center of the nether hub.
The nether hub
Our nether hub allows for fast transport between the different Memelands locations. In the tunnels, you can travel over 20 000 overworld blocks in under a minute.
The four tunnels stretch 1 000 blocks in each direction, but the ice road will in some cases expand longer than that.
The barrels on the side of central portal platform contain boats, and the lecterns are used to document what portals are in each tunnel.
Exploring the server
You may want to explore the server a bit on your first visit. However, there are a lot of locations in the nether hub and it would take hours if not days to explore them all. So we have compiled a list of builds/locations that we deem are worth visiting: the Memelands Epic Builds List! You can look through this list (in the form of a Google slideshow) and learn more about Memelands history and some information about each individual build. Of course you don't have to visit all of the locations, but one we highly recommend visiting on your first day is Anskar's castle.
One tool that is very handy when it comes to exploring the server is our Dynmap page. Dynmap is a Google maps-like map that makes our world viewable live in a browser.
There are markers placed out in Dynmap for each build in the Memelands Epic Builds List.
Choosing your first build location
There are a few things to consider when choosing where to start building, assuming you start off by building a base:

1: Is post 1.18 world generation important?
Memelands started in 1.14, so most of the land around spawn was generated before 1.18. If you do want to build in 1.18+ generated land, then we recommend either travelling to Norwich (a community town started in 1.18) or having a look on Dynmap where land is yet to be generated (see picture below). Norwich is located at (1325, 4200) in nether and can be reached by using the south tunnel going straight ahead!

2: How central do you want to be?
By building near the centre of the map you can save time by having most other locations close to you, assuming you often travel. However, with the nether hub being so effective this is probably not a big deal.

3: Do you want to live close to the activity?
Currently, Norwich is the town with the most active player base as it's recently started. So living near Norwich would be a great option if you like activity close by.

4: Is it important to live near shops?
Having shops nearby could save you some time if you like to spend your diamonds on the regular. Currently, there are two places with designated shopping areas: Spawn (Area 69) and Norwich.

5: Do you want to live in a specific biome?
Then Dynmap is your best friend, you can look for your favored biome there (even mushroom islands are easy to spot from above)!

When it comes to claiming build spots, we generally recommend that you claim your area using distinctive blocks and placing signs saying "claimed by X". But this is less important in sparsely populated areas.
Setting up nether portals correctly
In order for our nether hub to work as intended, it is important to follow our nether hub rules when setting up a nether portal. In nether, all portals that are linked to a portal within a 10 000 block radius of spawn in the overworld must be built on the nether roof. This means that if your portal in nether is within 1 250 blocks from (0, 0) you must build it on the nether roof. To set up your portal correctly, follow these simple steps:

1. Note down the coordinates of your overworld portal. Do not enter it. If you do enter it, you will most likely spawn a portal under the nether roof. If you accidentally enter it, then destroy the portal in nether and head to (0, 0), where you can make your way up to the roof.
2. Divide the overworld coordinates by 8 or use a nether portal calculator tool to obtain the correct nether coordinates.
3. Choose the correct tunnel (N, S, E, W) by going to the largest number coordinate first, and then build out to the smallest number coordinate.
4. Build your nether portal and add it to the portal list. Make sure to make your paths spawn proof both on the path and on top if you build a roof.
Setting up a shop
When setting up a shop, make sure to follow our shop rules.
To advertise your shop, use #shops in the discord server.

Good to know
-
The closest end portal to spawn is located at (-1800, -1320) in the overworld and (-220, -170) in the nether dimension. It is located in the west tunnel in the nether hub.
-
There are two public XP farms in the end dimension, one directly east and one southeast of the main island. These are really the only "public" farms on the server in the sense that they are free to use by anyone and maintained by the government. If you want to use any other already existing farm, you must ask the owner of that farm for permission first.
