THE HISTORY OF MEMELANDS
THICCBLOCC88
Dec. 2017 - May. 2018
Leoman1337 and Grool creates a realm on Minecraft Bedrock Edition for their friends. This would be the precursor to the Memelands server. The population is about 10 players, all from Sweden.
A JAVA REALM
May. 2018 - Sep. 2018
As the activity on ThiccBlocc88 starts to dry out, a new realm is created for Java Edition. Still only for friends and the population is still about 10 players.
MEMELANDS "SEASON 1"
Sep. 2018 - Dec. 2018
Leoman1337 creates the realm "Memelands" as an SMP. Being inspired by Hermitcraft, the realm is season-based. The success of the realm was great and it had about 50 members when the season ended. The success was perhaps too great, as the 10 player limit started to get reached during peak hours. Hence, the realm was switched to a server for season 2.
There are still some members from this time that are still active in the community. Those are Leoman1337, Grool, Nickaterial. This was the time when a player called Litarr first joined the community. He went on to be a central figure in the Memelands history books.
MEMELANDS "SEASON 2"
Dec. 2018 - Jan. 2019
The main character from this time was a player called Tellurium. He offered to keep the server running for a year, an offer that was too good for Leoman1337 to decline. But this meant that Tellurium had control over the server, and that resulted to be detrimental for the server. Because on the 18th of January 2019, Tellurium vanished from the community for unknown reasons, and the server eventually closed.

This was a huge let-down for the community as the activity was very high, peaking at 20 members online at the server at the same time during peak hours. Many members left the community and the admins Leoman1337 and Grool didn't know what to do. Was this the end for Memelands?

A major event from this time was the foundation of the Canadian Faction, a faction that is still alive today, with about 10 members.
MEMELANDS ANARCHY
Feb. 2019 - May. 2019
After the disappointing end to "Season 2", the admins Leoman1337 and Grool came up with an anarchy idea together with the Memelands Board group (the government of the Memelands community). A new server was rented and many Memelands members were optimistic of the server's future. Although it was well prepared, this idea was received terribly and Memelands hit rock-bottom having barely anyone on the server after the first few weeks.

As the admins decided to close the server, the community barely existed and the Memelands Board group was left confused on what was next for Memelands. At this point, many members believed this was the end. But the admins had other plans.
MEMELANDS
May. 2019 - Present
It was decided upon to make a significant remake of the server. The admins wanted to bring the community back together, and perhaps live up to the glory days of the first Memelands SMP. An idea was presented that would more or less redefine the identity of the server: the world shall never be reset. This would give a feeling of longevity that attracted a lot of interest.

The success was instant and over 20 players joined within the first 24 hours. But the success was quickly nullified by the big problem that many servers have to deal with: lag. The server needed an hardware upgrade but in order for that to happen, money needed to be raised. The community got together and raised 100 dollars in just a few weeks, enough for the server to be upgraded.

Memelands continued to thrive and at one point, the record for the most player online at the same time was broken, with as many as 24 players online at the same time. Although this level of activity was still hard for the server to handle, the lag was bearable.

Since the start of the server, many players have come and gone, groups have risen and fallen, legends have been made, and many blocks has been placed. Between May 2019 and January 2023, over 800 players have applied for the server. We are very proud of our server and community, and want to continue this project for as long as we enjoy it.
Thanks for reading! We will dig a bit deeper on the history of the server in future blog posts.
